Luke Phillips, a junior at North Caroline High School (NCHS), recently signed an Aviation Mechanic Apprenticeship contract with Tad Woodward, Chief Financial Officer at Trident Aircraft in Easton, Maryland.

Luke is in the Automotive Program at Caroline Career and Technology Center, taught by Mr. Greg Butler. The apprenticeship builds upon the program by providing on the job training and experience. Luke underwent an application and interview process with Trident and was chosen, according to Mr. Woodward, based on his qualifications and interest.

To finalize the apprenticeship agreement, a signing ceremony was held at the Trident Aircraft location with Luke, parents Mr. and Mrs. Phillips, sister Kylie, Mr. Woodward, and Steve Nawrocki, Trident Aircraft Supervisor who will be mentoring Luke. Also in attendance were district and school representatives Superintendent Derek L. Simmons, Director of College and Career Readiness Lindsey McCormick, Coordinator of Career Readiness Eric Cook, and NCHS School Counselor Jacqueline Holtzman. In addition, Jacqueline Trieu, Apprenticeship Navigator from the Maryland Department of Labor, was on hand to show her support.

Luke’s interest in aviation mechanics began with a trip to Africa at the age of 15. “We flew around in little airplanes and I loved it,” he said. Coupling that experience with a talent for working with his hands, CCTC’s Automotive Technology was a logical step.

Mr. Woodward said that given his past positive experiences with the Apprenticeship Program, he was happy to sign on again. He added that the program is an excellent opportunity for young people looking for a rewarding career in aviation as a pilot or mechanic.
