National Board Certification is a professional certification available in education and provides numerous benefits to teachers, students and schools. It was designed to develop, retain and recognize accomplished teachers and to generate ongoing improvement in schools nationwide.

“Acquiring an NBC is a rigorous, time-consuming, and demanding process that reflects a significant commitment,” said Anna Howie, Coordinator of Professional Learning for Caroline County Public Schools. “Candidates dedicate substantial time to documenting their instructional practices, developing comprehensive portfolios, preparing for assessments, and managing self-directed work, often extending the process beyond one year.”

Grounded in the National Board’s Five Core Propositions that describe what teachers should know and be able to do, the National Board certification process is designed to collect standards-based evidence of accomplished practice. In all 25 certificate areas, candidates are required to complete four components – content knowledge, differentiation in instruction, teaching practice and learning environment, and effective and reflective practitioner. The specific instructions will vary by certificate area, as will the standards assessed by each component.

New NBC teachers join a dedicated group of Caroline educators who have already earned and maintained their NBC status. Of note, teachers must renew their NBC every five years by submitting an ePortfolio with specific components.
