The inaugural Caroline Ag Day was a great success, thanks to the organization and support of the University of Maryland Extension (UME), district staff, and participation from both Colonel Richardson Middle School and Lockerman Middle School staff and students.
Students rotated through a variety of interactive stations that showcased the many exciting facets of agriculture:
· Ag & Food Systems: Students learned about the importance of bees and pollinators, explored fruits and vegetables, and participated in a seed dissection activity.
· Animal Agriculture: Hands-on learning about dairy and poultry gave students insight into animal care and production.
· Ag Technology: This station featured a tractor display, information on MAORC compost, and an exciting drone demonstration by Hoober’s.
· Land and Water: Students dug into soil science, discovered the role of mushrooms[] in agriculture, and learned about agronomic nutrients.
· CCPS Food and Nutrition: Students enjoyed food tasting and connecting local agriculture with healthy eating habits.
· UME Career Station: This station highlighted the wide range of careers available in the field of agriculture.
Superintendent Derek Simmons welcomed students and guests, including Maryland Secretary of Agriculture Kevin Atticks, and thanked Travis Ford, Caroline Agriculture Agent for UME, for organizing the day. Dr. Simmons also expressed his appreciation to the Caroline team who worked on the event, including Director of College & Career Readiness Lindsey McCormick, Supervisor of Food Services Beth Brewster, Supervisor of Instruction Will Grey, and their teams, as well as the principals, teachers, and transportation staff.
