Ridgely Elementary School Physical Education teacher James (J.J.) Hester recently received the Simon A. McNeely Award from SHAPE Maryland. The award was presented to Mr. Hester at the Shape MD conference earlier this month.
At the December Board of Education meeting, former Supervisor of Instruction Amy Towers (now principal at Caroline Career and Technology) explained that she nominated Mr. Hester because his “heart and soul” are devoted to being a physical education teacher at the elementary level. “Ridgely is so lucky to have him,” she said. “Moonlight bowling, glow in the dark golf - there’s something happening every holiday in his classroom. He is an amazing educator.”
Several Ridgely students were at the Board meeting and happily stepped up to have their picture taken with Mr. Hester.
The Simon A. McNeely Award recognizes educators who have made significant contributions to innovative teaching practices, demonstrated active involvement in their communities, and shown outstanding leadership in their schools and beyond. Named in honor of Mr. Simon McNeely, a special education teacher and long-standing member of the President's Council on Physical Fitness, as well as a member of the U.S. and International Olympic Committees, this award celebrates those who embody his spirit of service and dedication to healthful living.
