In August, the Federalsburg Elementary School Judy Center Early Learning Hub marked its 25th Anniversary with a joyful celebration that honored its rich history while looking toward the future.

Throughout the Judy Center, displays showcased photos and projects from past and present families, some of whom attended the event to reconnect and reflect on their experiences.

During a brief program, Superintendent Dr. Derek Simmons highlighted the center’s significance in Maryland’s early childhood education landscape. “This center holds a special place in Maryland’s early childhood education history,” he said. “As one of the original 13 Judy Centers established statewide, its success helped inspire state legislation that led to the creation of more centers across Maryland, bringing essential services to children and families throughout the state.”

Supervisor of Instruction Elizabeth Saylor acknowledged the foundational role of former staff and families in shaping the center’s success. “The Judy Center would not be where it is today without their dedication,” she said. “That’s why this celebration was designed as a family-friendly event—to honor and celebrate them.”

Both Dr. Simmons and Ms. Saylor praised the unwavering commitment of Judy Center Coordinator Heather Harding, calling her the "heartbeat" of the center. In return, Ms. Harding thanked her staff and paid tribute to Tearesa French, the longtime Judy Center Supervisor who was instrumental in bringing the initiative to Caroline County.

The program also featured a heartfelt video with interviews and clips of children and families who have been part of the center over the years.

After the indoor program, guests joined families outside for food and festivities. A bubble machine stole the show, with children (and more than a few adults) splashing and dancing through clouds of suds. The evening was filled with joyful memories and a sense of pride in how far the center and the community has come.

Judy Center Early Learning Hubs serve as comprehensive hubs where families can engage in learning experiences with their children from prenatal stages through age five and access support services. Using a multigenerational approach, Judy Centers focus on families and children. Early Learning Hubs are designed to prepare children for success in school and life by empowering their most important teachers—their families. Through various initiatives and community partnerships, Judy Center Early Learning Hubs focus on enhancing school readiness for children by providing support in child development and family support.
