At the March 26 meeting of the Maryland State Board of Education, Superintendent Derek Simmons participated in the Public Comment portion of the meeting. He brought remarks on behalf of the Public School Superintendents Association of Maryland (PSSAM) on the topic of the Blueprint with regard to College and Career Readiness (CCR) funding.

The Accountability and Implementation Board, along with MSDE, plan to revise guidance for school systems now that there is a CCR standard established. Dr. Simmons highlighted the discrepancy in the current requirements for dual enrollment opportunities and amount of funding received to cover the expense of doing so. He shared that for the past few years in Caroline County, enrollment in dual enrollment has doubled. However, the cost to the system has increased by 984%.

Dr. Simmons asked the State Board to take the funding limitations into account when developing the new guidance.

The meeting video is available online, with Dr. Simmons’ remarks beginning at 23:35.
