The North Caroline High School Unified Sports Team earned two medals, a silver and a bronze, at the Special Olympics Maryland State High School Strength and Conditioning competition at Chesapeake College. NCHS sent 26 participants – nine athletes and 17 partners.
Unified Sports is a concept that brings together athletes with and without disabilities who train and compete together in fulfilling and fun inclusion experiences. Athletes often form lifelong bonds of friendship and mutual respect.
CCPS Director of Special Programs Elizabeth (Twigg) Anthony stated, “Unified sports provides meaningful involvement, giving each player the opportunity to contribute to the success of the team through his or her own unique skills. It’s amazing to see the relationships created between the students with disabilities and their partners. It’s a win-win situation for everyone.”
