Miss Maryland Reads to DES 3rd Graders

Caitlyn Stupi, Miss Maryland 2019, visited Denton Elementary School to read to students in 3rd grade classrooms. Ms. Stupi’s platform as Miss Maryland is ‘Common Cents: Promoting Youth Financial Literacy,’ and she is the author of Pete and Penny Learn Common Sense.

Ms. Stupi read her book to students and shared a lesson that showed the difference between ‘need’ versus ‘want’. Students had to decide how to spend $100 using the categories of Buy, Save, and Give, and discuss ways to earn money.

Students asked many questions including, “What do you do?” (lots of charity events, parades, and advocacy work around the topic of financial literacy) and “How do you keep the crown on your head?” (LOTS of pins and clips!)
