Each year for the past twenty years, Lockman Middle School geography teacher Katherine Southworth’s students have partnered with Lifetime Wells International for a Service Learning Project. Lifetime Wells International, the well-drilling ministry of Ken Wood, has drilled more than 1,600 wells in Ghana and Tanzania since 2006 to provide clean, safe water to over a million people.

The project usually begins with Mr. Wood visiting students Geography class, sharing his experiences, and getting them excited about contributing. Each year, students set a goal to raise $3,500 which is roughly the cost of drilling a well. “As far back as I can remember,  every year students have met or exceeded that goal,” Ms. Southworth said.

This year, a walkathon raised $4,281. To honor that donation, Mr. Wood installed a nameplate on a new drill. Ms. Southworth stated, “I am super proud of our students!”
