May 19, 2020 – This past March, the Colonel Richardson High School Wind Ensemble travelled to North Dorchester High School to perform in the District 5 Band Festival, the regional assessment for concert band programs on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

CRHS’ performance of level 4 music, under the direction of Mr. Thomas Cheezum, was rated Superior, receiving a 1 from judges who work as band directors and music coordinators throughout the Maryland state secondary school and collegiate music community.  Pieces performed were Still Wie Die Nacht by Bohm/arr by Spinney, Chant and Jubilo by MacBeth, and Exaltation by Swearingen.

The rating qualified the CRHS Wind Ensemble for the 2020 Maryland State Band Assessment.  This is the third time in recent years that the CRHS Wind Ensemble has been rated Superior at the District 5 Band Festival.

North Caroline’s ensemble also performed under the direction of Mr. EJ Oesterle and received an Excellent rating of II for their performance of level 3 pieces.  They played Lincoln at Gettysburg by Barry Kopetz, With Quiet Courage by Larry Daehn, and Moving at the Speed of Sound by Mark Lortz.

“We are extraordinarily proud of how well our student musicians perform and compete among their peers,” said Amy Shepler, CCPS Supervisor of Instruction. “The teaching staff is dedicated to training and preparing them, and it shows in their performances.”

Both performances can be viewed on YouTube, with the NCHS performance beginning at the 14:00 minute mark, followed by the CRHS performance at the 28:00 minute mark.
