GES Young Gentlemen’s Club a Success

The Young Gentlemen’s Club at Greensboro Elementary School was formed in January by Dr. James Orr and Principal Dawn Swann. The club consisted of 25 fifth graders, selected through teacher recommendation, who met weekly to learn various skills and attitudes that will help them to navigate life successfully.

Dr. Orr enlisted the help of Officer Andrew Durham, Mr. Colin Joseph, Mr. Dave Melchoir, Officer Bryan Peris, Mr. Dwayne Thomas, and Mr. Nick Wake. They became club coaches and assisted with weekly meeting agendas and lessons.

Members memorized the following pledge:

“Today I pledge to be the best me I can be. Today I pledge to treat others with respect and courtesy. Today I pledge to be helpful to others and a positive role model for those I come in contact with. Today I will demonstrate I’m a gentleman!”

The final activity for the club was a banquet for members, families, coaches, and administration and staff. Dr. Orr thanked coaches, school administration and teachers, and CCPS administration and board members for their support. He also thanked the following businesses and individuals for donations and services that supported the club:

  • Walmart and store manager Bill Duffy
  • Greensboro Lion’s Club
  • SaveALot
  • The Barry Family
  • Mr. Bill Beatty
  • The Dean Family
  • Dr. Mark Farber
  • The Fitzgerald Family
  • Mr. Josh Huster
  • Dr. Joe McCarthy
  • Rev. Dave Morley
  • Mr. Edgar Muldanado
  • Ms. Joyce Mulholland
  • The Orr Family
  • Commissioner Larry Porter
  • The Swann Family

The highlight of the banquet was club members escorting guests to their seats, assisting with serving and clearing, and receiving certificates and books. Club members also surprised Dr. Orr with a thank you gift that included a tie embroidered with the club initials, YGC. A club reunion is planned for April.
