The top three spellers from each of the county’s five elementary schools came together at the Caroline County Public Library in Denton on Wednesday night to compete in the Annual Countywide Spelling Bee for fifth graders. Alejandro Olvera-Galindo from Denton Elementary emerged as the first place winner, followed by Brennen Griffin from Ridgely Elementary in second place, and Ryleigh Hall from Preston Elementary in third place.
In addition to an impressive display of skill and strategy, contestants also showed an enormous amount of good sportsmanship. They smiled, high-fived, and whispered words of encouragement and support to each other between turns, indicating they are more than just excellent spellers.
Prior to the countywide event, each elementary school conducted their own spelling bee. The first, second, and third place winners were then eligible to complete in the countywide contest. Each school also designated their fourth place winner as an alternate if needed.
The event is now in its 43rd year and sponsored by the organization Teachers Can Help (TCH). The top three winners receive monetary awards, and the first place student receives a plaque to be displayed in their school.
