The Colonel Richardson High School Spirit of the Revolution Marching Band had an impressive showing at Hershey Park Stadium at the Tournament of Bands Atlantic Coast Championships on Sunday, October 27th, 2019. They received a score of 83.0, a school record since beginning to compete again in 2013, and then fully re-entering the competition circuit 4 years ago, following a hiatus of over a decade. The band competed in the Group 1 Open class in which bands can have no more than 30 band members on the field and similarly limits the number of color guard members. The Open class is the designation used for bands that wish to be judged based on an intermediate to advanced marching skill level and musical ability.
The Band’s show is entitled “Escape Velocity” which commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, where Neil Armstrong took the first steps on the moon. The Band told the story in four movements, featuring such space themed tunes as ‘Rocket Man’ by Elton John, ‘Space Oddity’ by David Bowie, and ‘Fly Me To The Moon’ by Frank Sinatra.
Band director Thomas Cheezum stated, “I’ve really felt like we were doing something special this year. We’ve been very successful and are beginning to make the progress we need to return to prominence the way the CRHS Band was in the ’90s.” Mr. Cheezum will announce the theme of next year’s marching band show at the conclusion of the music department’s annual field trip in the Spring of 2020.
