April 28, 2020 – In this unprecedented time of school closures and social distancing, schools are working out alternative ways to make sure students get some much-deserved recognition. In the coming weeks, customized yard signs will be purchased to honor each graduating senior.

All seniors will receive a sign featuring their name, photo, and school mascot to be displayed in their yard or window. A second identical sign will be part of a collective Class of 2020 display for each school. North Caroline signs will be placed along a section of Route 404. Colonel Richardson signs will be distributed between Federalsburg Elementary and Preston Elementary schools, locations that are more visible than the CRHS campus.

CRHS Principal Nikki VonDenBosch said, “This is one small way in which we can celebrate this milestone with them, even from a distance.” Matt Spiker, Principal at NCHS agreed, saying, “We hope the signs let our seniors know how proud we are of them.”

Superintendent Patty Saelens stated, “CCPS is more than happy to provide funding for the yard signs. Our hope is that all our graduates feel special and know how much they are loved and missed.”

Regarding other graduation details, Superintendent Patty Saelens asked each high school principal to convene a committee made up of senior class leaders, parents, advisors, and counselors to discuss alternate ways to honor and celebrate the Class of 2020. Committees have been meeting and will soon be submitting plans for approval at the board level.
