CCPS honors athletes with Unsung Hero Award

Prior to the start of the annual football game between Colonel Richardson High School (CRHS) and North Caroline High School (NCHS), Superintendent Patricia Saelens honored one player from each team with the Superintendent’s Unsung Hero Award.

The medallions were awarded to Jordan Gabriel from CRHS and Cody Hunter from NCHS. CRHS head coach Dan Mangum said Gabriel was a leader on the team and is a dedicated worker. NCHS head coach James McCormick said Hunter was nominated for his work ethic.

Prior to the game, Dr. Saelens described the purpose of the award. “Not every leader has a title or commands attention. They are not always the best athlete or have the highest GPA. Some of our most influential leaders fly under the radar. This award does not diminish the efforts or importance of teams. However, this award recognizes the person who smiles when no one else does, who encourages when others want to give up, and who is positive in the face of negativity. This award is given to the unsung hero who deserves recognition.”
