Updated: Shortly following this news release, the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) released a statement: Due to recent events regarding the spread of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), MSDE, in consultation with the Maryland Department of Health, is advising that all scheduled out-of-state and international field trips sanctioned by local school systems for students and staff be cancelled indefinitely. Complete news release.
March 11, 2020 - Superintendent Patty Saelens announced that all out-of-state field trips are canceled due to concerns about COVID-19 (coronavirus). The decision was made shortly after Gov. Hogan’s announcement that he was canceling out-of-state travel for state employees, and after consultation with local healthcare officials.
Regarding in-state field trips, decisions will be made based on factors such as the destination and the number of students, staff, and chaperones attending.
“We are confident that this is the right decision for the health and well-being of our staff and students,” Dr. Saelens said. “However, we understand how disappointing it is for everyone involved, especially when students were looking forward to a field trip experience.” She added, “As we work our way through this unique situation, we appreciate the support of our healthcare partners, students, families, and community.”
